Trans-Pecos Texas, A Study of Exploration
by J. P. Burnett

|
Originally published as a master’s thesis, Trans-Pecos
Texas, A Study of Exploration offers any student of
Texas history a clear and concise chronology of the
exploration of the rugged and vast areas of west Texas.
J.P. Burnett was born in Rising Star, Texas and spent
most of his years teaching Texas History when not
prowling the canyons and washes of his native state. His
writing style is easy and unaffected. The Pecos River
posed a great challenge to westward progress because of
its rugged and deep canyons. From the Gaspar Castano de
Sosa Exposition of 1590 to the early survey work of Van
Horn, there are maps as well as anecdotes describing the
challenges, failures, forts and follies of early
explorers. Basic geology of the region, native peoples,
camels, conflicts and springs are all discussed along
with the later arrival of stage ways, railways and the
evolution of the modern trans-Pecos region. Bibliography
offers great opportunities for further study. Limited
number of editions available.
